HOW WE ASSESS
Throughout your child’s Primary education they will be assessed. There are two different types of assessment - formal assessments that are carried out nationally and more informal assessments carried out by the school. Reception Class On entry to school the children are given simple tasks to carry out which give us an indication of their strengths and weaknesses. These tasks are carried out during the Autumn term and the Reception class teacher will have individual appointments with the parents to discuss the results and set targets for the pupils to work towards. From the results we can identify the pupils that may have special educational needs. These pupils will be entered onto the Special Needs Register, and the parents informed. More formal screening will be carried out towards the end of the child’s first year at school Year 2 In the Spring term of Year 2 the pupils will take part in SATS (standard attainment tests and tasks) They will carry out tests and tasks in maths and english. Science levels are awarded using teacher assessment. A child working at the average level for their age should achieve a Level 2. We hold information meetings for parents prior to the SATS and another meeting to explain the results. Year 3 All schools in Surrey screen pupils in Year 3. They carry out tests that determine reading age, maths ability and IQ levels. This again gives the school a very clear indication that the pupils are performing at their expected levels. The results of these tests are discussed between the Headteacher and parents. Optional SATS in maths and English are also carried out. Years 4 and 5 In Years 4 and 5 pupils are tested using optional SATS materials. These are carried out during the summer term and again help us to track the pupils’ progress and predict Year 6 levels. Year 6 In their final year the pupils are tested on Maths, Science and English. These test papers are externally marked and the overall school results published. A pupil working at an average level will be expected to achieve a level 4. Reading Ages
Throughout the school we carry out annual tests on reading ages to ensure that pupils are making progress in reading appropriate to their ability. The school, to track progress and set targets, uses all this information for the pupils. National curriculum levels are recorded annually and can be discussed with parents. Pupils have targets set in class to improve their work. |
