FOUNDATION AND KEY STAGE 1 CURRICULUM
The pupils in Reception class follow a curriculum known as the Foundation Stage. The Foundation Stage prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 and is consistent with the National Curriculum.
The Foundation Stage is organised into six areas of learning:
1. Personal, social and emotional development
2. Communication, language and literacy
3. Mathematical development
4. Knowledge and understanding of the world
5. Physical development
6. Creative development
The children are trained from Reception class to work independently. The children will be taught as a whole class, in groups and as individuals. Mainly, the class is divided into groups and during the day they move from one activity to another with the aid of a reference board to direct them to their next task. This helps the children with their independent working and learning and frees the teacher to work with focused groups. The teacher will also move around the room dealing with marking and the children’s individual needs. Each class in Key Stage 1 also has an attached Learning Support Assistant who works with identified groups of children. The pupils in Years 1 and 2 follow the National Curriculum in all subjects.
