KEY STAGE 2 CURRICULUM
The school Years 3 to 6 are known as Key Stage 2. The work carried out in Key Stage 1 lays the foundation for Key Stage 2 and again the children are given work that builds on what they already know. The curriculum for Key Stage 2 covers the same subjects as in Key Stage 1 but more time is given to each area.
In Years 3 and 4, 5 and 6 the arrangements for teaching numeracy and literacy are different. The year groups are combined and the children are divided into 3 ability groups. This enables the children to be taught in smaller groups and with children of a similar ability. We have worked this system for 6 years and the standards reached in each year group, and in the SATS results, have improved. In Years 3 and 4, 5 and 6, groups take place 3 mornings a week and on the 4th and 5th day the children work in their classes on extended writing and maths investigations. All other subjects are taught in their year groups. Emphasis is still placed on the pupils working independently. The pupils need to organise themselves to make sure that they have all the right books and equipment Homework Homework is set on a regular basis in Key Stage 2. Pupils will be expected to read every night and will bring a book from school. They will be set numeracy and literacy work and weekly spellings. Topic work and Science are also set. Responsibility In Year 6 we give the pupils opportunities to develop their organisational skills. We appoint various monitors and prefects to carry out set tasks around the school. Throughout the year we try to make sure that everyone is given a responsibility. One of the strengths of the school is the interaction between Year 6 and the younger pupils. They play together at lunchtimes and work together in some curriculum areas such as shared reading. |
