Year R

 Welcome to Hedgehog Class

I hope you have had a lovely summer holiday!

I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child and working together so that we have a fun and exciting year. I hope that your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning that Reception has to offer!

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from Nursery to Reception. The curriculum builds upon and extends, the experiences that your child has had, learning through play and adult directed tasks. The children will be taught to read and write through a scheme called ‘Read Write Inc’, this is taught 4 days a week. The children will learn a new sound each day and have homework relating to the new sound.

We are very busy in Hedgehog Class learning across the curriculum to meet the ‘Early Learning Goals’. There are 7 areas of learning in Reception which include; Communication and Language, Mathematics, Literacy, Personal Social and Emotional, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design and Physical Development. Throughout the week the children will be encouraged to take part in a variety of activities which cover the curriculum.

Our Topic for this term is Fairy Tales, Family and Me.

Each week we will be looking at a different Fairy Tales and linking the story to our own lives, for example;

Week beginning 18th Sept: Our story focus will be 'The Ugly Duckling'. We will be looking at how we change and grow over time and focus on making class rules and how to be a kind friend.
Reading and Writing

As mentioned above the children will be learning a new sound each day. They will then bring home the new sound card to practise and share with you. They will also bring homework relating to the new sound.

The children will also bring home a reading book. To begin with every child will have a wordless book, once they are ready for words they will move through the stages. Every child is assessed and moved levels according to their reading ability.

To begin with reading books will be changed Mon, Weds and Fri when a comment has been made to indicate that they have read.

(This can be a written comment on what the children say about the book or just a smiley face or tick).

Show and Tell

We do ‘show and tell’ in Hedgehog Class; this is a chance for your child to bring something from home to share with the class. We do ask that the children try and stick to the topic, bringing in books, drawing/writing, photos and toys that are linked to what we are learning about. Your child will be given a day!

Please do not send in fragile items as the children do handle them when showing the class.

Please remember that your child does need a water bottle at school every day.

They also need to bring their P.E kits to school on a Monday and take them home on a Friday. Please ensure that every item of clothing is clearly labelled.

The children will visit our school library every Wednesday. They will be encouraged to choose a book to take home and share with you. The books need to be kept safe at home during the week and returned back to school on the following Wednesday.

We are always very busy in Hedgehog class please look on the website and in their communication books to find out any updates!

If you have any questions about any of the information in this letter please feel free to come and speak to me before or after school.

Thank you

Miss Kirby
