Thinking Schools Metacognition Project

We started a 2-year project through 'Thinking Schools Network', affiliated with Exeter University in September 2024.

Staff have undertaken 12 hours of training so far, to better understand how the brain works, growth mindsets and using key strategies to develop our children's metacognition.

The aim of our 2-year project is to fully embed the use of 'Thinking Frames' as a learning tool in all classes from Reception to Year 6. These will be complimented with 'Thinking Moves' to help children develop their own independence to support their thinking process and generate and record ideas when setting off to complete learning. For example, when comparing Hinduism with Christianity, children will use a 'Comparing Contrasting' frame to plot their ideas, which they can then use to support themselves independently writing a convincing paragraph about these two religions.

These can be use in all areas of the curriculum and we hope that by equipping our children with a set of 8 'Thinking Frames' (see below), they will be able to use these independently to steer and support their thinking.
