Welcome back to the Summer term. We hope you had a wonderful Easter break.
Our topic this term is all about ‘Australia’. As part of this topic the children will be learning about the customs, weather and landmarks of this country. They will be practising geography skills and comparing countries as well as trying some of their own Aboriginal art.
In Maths, we will be continuing to focus on place value, number bonds and their application in problem solving. We will also be looking at measures including weight and capacity.
Please continue with regular home reading and it is important that you discuss the books with your child and ask questions to help develop their comprehension skills. Reading folders need to come into school every day. The children will continue to receive weekly spellings which will have a particular sound focus. In addition, it would be a huge benefit if you could continue to practise the common exception words at home. They will also receive weekly maths homework based on what we have been learning in class. We will also be sending out phonics practice sheets for you to do with your child at home in preparation for the phonics screening check.
PE days are Wednesdays and Thursdays so please ensure PE kits are in on these days. Please ensure that your child has named tracksuit bottoms/shorts, a jumper and trainers in their PE kit as well as a coat for playtimes. It would be a huge help if you could continue to check that all items are named.
Our Science topic this half term is Plants and we will be looking at Spring and Summer and the seasonal changes.
Show and tell will continue to be on a Tuesday. This will be on rotation and your child will be informed during the week they can bring in show and tell. The groups will also be displayed in the classroom window. If your child has any topic related items or work to share with the class this can be shared any day of the week.
We will be visiting the library on Mondays. Please can library books come into school on this day, either to be renewed or changed.
For your information, the year 1 Phonics screening check will take place in the second half of this term. Please look out for the practice packs for you to do with your child at home.
We would also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all of your continued support. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to come and ask.
