Year R

Half term overview

 Welcome to Hedgehog Class

I hope you have had a lovely Easter holiday!

We are very busy in Hedgehog Class learning across the curriculum to meet the ‘Early Learning Goals’. There are 7 areas of learning in Reception which include; Communication and Language, Mathematics, Literacy, Personal Social and Emotional, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design and Physical Development. Throughout the week the children will be encouraged to take part in a variety of activities which cover the curriculum.

Our Topic for this term is Amazing Animals.

Each week we will focus on different mini topics such as; minibeasts, life cycles and gentle giants. As part of our topic we will be going on an exciting adventure to 'Chessington World of Adventures'.

Reading and Writing

The children have now learnt all of set one sounds and many set 2 sounds. They are becoming more confident writers and enjoy lots of different activities within the class using their phonics knowledge!

We will continue to change reading books Monday, Wednesday and Friday unless stated otherwise! It is important to read every night whether they have a new book or not as the more practise they get the more confident they become.

Show and Tell

We do ‘show and tell’ in Hedgehog Class; this is a chance for your child to bring something from home to share with the class. We do ask that the children try and stick to the topic, bringing in books, drawing/writing, photos and toys that are linked to what we are learning about.

Please do not send in fragile items as the children do handle them when showing the class.

Please remember that your child does need a water bottle at school every day.

They also need to bring their P.E kits to school on a Monday and take them home on a Friday. Please ensure that every item of clothing is clearly labelled.

The children will visit our school library every Wednesday. They will be encouraged to choose a book to take home and share with you. The books need to be kept safe at home during the week and returned back to school on the following Wednesday.

We are always very busy in Hedgehog class please look on the website and in their communication books to find out any updates!

Swimming will start in the second half term, information will be sent home nearer the time!

As the weather is getting warmer, please ensure you apply sun cream to your child before school. They will also need a named hat and water bottle at school every day!
